DIY Projects and Semi Conductors
A semiconductor is an electronic component that is made of certain materials which can conduct electricity but has some resistance inside a specified range. There are many different types of DIY electronic projects that use Semi conductors, they can range from very simple to very complex. Simple projects use common components and simple circuitry. For the advanced do-it-yourselfer there are more complex circuits and components used such as semiconductors. Here are a few DIY projects for the experienced electronic buff.
Temperature Controllers
This is a complex project that requires a good foundation in electricity and electrical components. Parts needed include a microcontroller, relays, resistors, switches, and fuses. Along with these components you will also need to have access to and knowledge of power adapters, perf boards and a breadboard. You will also need to have a probe to determine the temperature. A savvy DIY-er can use an oven probe as it has a resistance of 1000 Ohms. The circuitry for this type of project is very complicated and detailed. Its complexity will also depend on the precise temperature setting that are desired. In order to program the temperature controller it is necessary to understand some programming basics.
Simple Audio Amp
In order to build a basic audio amplifier you will need several components including an LM 386 semiconductor. Along with that it is necessary to obtain some micro Farad capacitors, variable resistors, and capacitors. Everything can be placed on a basic project board. This project only requires some basic knowledge of how to set up a power supply and sound components. Most of the electrical components are easy to obtain. There is some basic circuitry necessary to build the audio amplifier.
Semiconductors and Solar Panels
The use of solar panels are on the increase for a lot of reasons; and they remain one reasonable alternative for an energy source. In years gone by they were not as efficient but over the last few years they have become more efficient and much more practical to use. A solar panel is constructed of numerous solar cells. Each single solar cell contains thinly sliced silicon. Silicon is also used abundantly by the computer industry. Silicon is a natural resource which is abundantly available. It is a great resource because it is a natural semiconductor. When light hits the positive side of a slice of silicon the electrons try to move over toward the negative side. If you connect the two sides with wire, an electrical circuit is created and it is a great way to capture and use electrical activity. The construction of a solar panel is done by grouping several solar cells together and connecting them using electrical wires to form a module, or a panel. Modules are then placed in a series, or an array. The size of this array or arrangement and the quality of the silicon or semiconductor material will determine the amount of power it puts out. It is also possible to use an inverter that can convert this form of DC power to AC so that the electricity produced can be used to power appliances and other electrical devices.
